A day in the life of a lost wallet

Yesterday we went to town for a dentist appointment for Chad, on our way down we stopped to get some food really fast. As we were leaving the parking lot, waiting at the red light, we saw a wallet on the cross walk right in front of us. I told Chad that we should get it because we know that we will get it back to the owner without stealing money, identity or anything like that and you never know who might pick it up. He said, " no let's just leave it there".

The light changed and we drove like ten feet and Chad said "well maybe we should pick it up. " So he pulled over and we waited like ten minutes for a clear spot in the traffic so he could turn back around. Once we got a clear spot, we turned around and were back to the same place we started, except that there was a blue Lexus in front of us. We were at a red light again so we waited for the light to turn green, then I hurried out of the car as soon as the car ahead of us pulled out to go, grabbed the wallet and jumped back in the car.

While we were driving, we were trying to find a number or something to contact him. We saw a number on his blockbuster card and thought it might be his, so Chad called it and it turned out to be blockbuster. She said that we couldn't give us his number for privacy reasons but that we could leave our information and they'd call him . So we left our name and number for them so that Dwayne could call us back. We weren't sure how long it would take, but we noticed that he was a fireman because he had a badge in his wallet, so we drove to the Kaneohe fire department.

Chad parked at the station and went to drop it off with the chief, but the entire fire station was locked up. He came back to the car and we got a phone call from him. He said he was at Blockbuster and when we told him the story of how we got his wallet, he said that he saw us pick up the wallet in the street because he was the guy in the blue Lexus ahead of us. I thought that was strange that he was in the same place at the same time and didn't see his wallet. did he know it was missing? Had he been looking for it and been unsuccessful? I was kinda confused about what was going on at that point. He asked us to drop of the wallet with the chief, but we said that everything was locked up at the Fire Department. He mentioned that that was strange and they must be out doing a drill or something. We arranged to meet him at the blockbuster. While we were driving there Chad and I talked about why he'd watch us pick up his wallet and not stop us and also about why he was already at blockbuster. It all just seemed so strange.

We pulled into the parking lot at blockbuster and Chad went to deliver the wallet. Dwayne was already coming out the door with a movie in his hand when Chad got to the door. They talked while Kaiya and I sat in the car watching them for a good ten minutes. They were talking with their hands a lot and laughing and acting like they were so comfortable with each other. I was just wondering what the heck they were talking about.

So here's the story Chad came back to the car with. Dwayne, a member of the Hauula firefighting squad, was the car in front of us when I got out of the car to get the wallet. He thought I had dropped my wallet and was picking it up, which is why he didn't stop us from picking up his wallet. After that he went to blockbuster to pick up a movie to watch, when he was at the counter the woman said "your Dwayne? You have a phone call, somebody has your wallet" So she hadn't even called him yet. He was probably at blockbuster looking for movies when we called. He called us and since nobody was at the police station to drop it off to, we had to bring it to him. The weird part is is that the wallet had been lost for a month. a MONTH! Nothing was stolen from the wallet or anything. It couldn't have been in the crosswalk for a month. My question is where on earth was the wallet this whole time? it's so weird to me that we crossed paths so many times, and that his wallet was gone for a month before we happened to be in the right place at the right time; in a place we are not usually at, so that we could pick up his wallet and get it back to him.

He told Chad that he thought it was strange how all this happened, and that we live all the way in Laie by Hauula where he works. He said it gave him goose bumps and then he gave us twenty bucks. Chad tried to refuse it, but he really wanted us to have it. He was a really nice guy and he made our day a little bit more interesting. And I'm still pondering how this whole thing went down, it's just a strange situation.

That was a great story. I can't believe it was missing for a month that is nuts! Well I guess it's just good that it is back the rightful owner.
